[S] We first met at the Jackson International Airport in January 2010. Greg worked at Hertz and I worked at Enterprise.
[G] I knew Sonnetta was the one when she surprised me while I was at home dealing with the passing of my mother. Sonnetta called to check on me (at least that’s what I thought), little did I know that she had booked a flight and landed in Chicago to be with my family and I in our time of sorrow. I knew at that point that Sonnetta was going to have my back for the rest of my life. That simple act of kindness and sincerity showed me that this is the women I want by my side forever.
[S] I knew Greg was the one for me when because God literally answered my prayers……I mean literally. Lots of people ask God for things that they want and need, well I asked God for both at the same time. A few years before Greg and I started dating I prayed to God and asked him to send me a man made just for me. I asked God to send me someone who had Christ at the head of his life, someone who is as passionate about music as I am (I even added it would be cool if he was a drummer like myself), someone that had a great since of humor, fun loving, loved sports as much as I did, a protector, handsome of course, and have dreads (because I always wanted to date a guy with dreads). God gave me everything I asked for even down to the drum playing and dreads, but the crazy part about all of that is Greg and I had met years ago when I was playing the drums for a convention and he happened to be playing for our gospel poetry night and he gave me some pointers about playing, God knew His plan for us all alone…he briefly put us together at that moment but we had no clue that years later we would be planning our future preparing to spend the rest of our lives together as one.
[S] I didn’t see it coming the way it did. I had a feeling Greg was up to something for Valentine’s Day but I had no idea it was a proposal. Greg had my family and friends in on it. Everything was perfect, it completely threw me off, almost like it was surreal. Greg took me to a restaurant named Olga’s. This restaurant had live music and it was a very intimate setting. I notice Greg was started to act strange like he was looking for someone, but before I could ask him what was wrong, my friends were on stage playing and singing He Proposed (by Kelly Price) and my family was walking through the door each carrying a different colored rose and handing them to me. By the time I turned around Greg was on one knee. I was completely thrown off, it was perfect.
[G] I had planned the proposal three months before it happened. After I received Sonnetta’s parents blessing, her sister helped me find the perfect restaurant to carry out the night. I had the song picked out and I asked Sonnetta’s favorite vocalists (Larry and LeAndria) to perform it. When Valentine rolled around and it was time for the big proposal, I was amazed at how flawless everything went. I wasn’t nervous, but very excited to propose to the women who I fell in love with at first sight.
[S] The thing I love most about Greg is his perseverance and drive. When Greg believes God has something for him he does whatever it takes to go out and get it. He never gives up, and I love that about him.
[G] The thing that I love the most about Sonnetta is the fact that she supports and knows how to keep me grounded. She is the only woman besides my mother (R.I.P) and my sister Shelly that knows how to tell it like it is and keep me in check whenever I may get out of line.
[G] Sonnetta loves doing comedy skits which consist of rapping, singing, and preaching. Her rap name is Lil Flo Woo the Jack-town Ju (just to give you an idea), she brings in the gospel as Evangelist Sunny D, and when she is singing she is Diva Sunny.
[S] Greg loves to try to sing when he thinks I’m not paying attention, and he tries to make little runs while he sings but it’s the same one over and over again. He thinks it’s a different run but it the same run he just sings in a different key.
[S] The one thing we are looking forward to besides getting married, is being in each other’s company for the first time in six months, since Greg was stationed on a new job in Pennsylvania
[S] I have always wanted black and white as my wedding colors because I always thought that it would be very classy and elegant.
[G] I always wanted a Harlem Nights type of wedding.
Congrats to the happy couple and I wish you all the very best!!
