Good evening and Happy Mardi Gras! I write to you from Hotel Intercontinental where I’m staying for Mardi Gras. I managed to skip celebrating for the past two years for reasons that I really don’t remember right now, but am happy I decided to partake in the sights, sounds(and smell) of Mardi Gras.
When the day began I knew what I wanted to capture early on so there was not much to think about in the terms of my thought process. It had been several years since I had photographed the New Orleans skyline and what better occasion then Lundi Gras, right. Off to the West Bank I go armed with nothing more than my old 10d and a tripod. I set up my tripod on the levee of the West Bank and began to shoot several frames. After about 15 minutes of shooting, I felt like I had enough to make a decision on what I wanted to keep so I climbed down the levee when all of a sudden, I heard the sounds of fireworks! WOW! I immediately made my way back to the top of this hill and found a nice vantage point where I could frame the fireworks nicely over the city. I was losing light very quickly so I had to work fast! I grabbed a few more frames until the finale and was satisfied of my capture.
I made it back home on the afternoon of Mardi Gras and loaded the images on my pc. I was pleased with what I was able to capture on the day before. The images had actually looked better to me on my calibrated monitor than they had on my small camera LCD.
